Is Your Business Ready for an ERP System?

Business Systems 4 min readBy the Four Chords team

Enterprise Resource Planning sounds like something only large corporations need. In practice, an ERP is simply one shared system for the records your business already keeps: sales, stock, purchasing, invoices, staff. The question is not whether you are big enough, but whether your current tools are holding you back.

Five signs you are ready

  1. The numbers never agree. Sales says one thing, stock says another and finance has a third version.
  2. Reports take days. By the time the monthly report is compiled, it is already out of date.
  3. Knowledge lives in one head. If a key person is away, nobody can find the price list or the supplier history.
  4. You are opening a second location. What worked from one desk does not work across two branches.
  5. Errors are costing money. Duplicate orders, missed invoices and stock that is never where the spreadsheet says.

Start with the process, not the software

The most common ERP mistake is choosing a product first. Instead, map how an order moves through your business from enquiry to payment, and mark where it slows down or breaks. That map tells you which modules matter and which can wait.

Think in phases

A focused first phase, such as inventory and invoicing, delivers value quickly and builds confidence. Later phases add purchasing, HR or reporting once the foundation is trusted.

Plan for people

A system is only as good as the data entered into it. Budget time for training, written procedures and a short period of running old and new side by side.

If any of the five signs sound familiar, we would be glad to talk it through.
